With Halloween quickly approaching you may be on the look out for Vampires. One particular one that you should be sure to avoid is what is commonly referred to as the “Energy Vampire”. 40% of energy used is from appliances that are turned off-according to the National Resources Defense Council. If you spend $1000 dollars a year on energy, than you are giving away $600 unnecessarily. For a breakdown of wasted energy in atypical home, see this chart.
What can we do to stop wasting so much energy? There are some very basic things we can all do TODAY to save.
1. If you are not using an appliance, unplug it. While this may seem like a hassle, if done consistently, it will become second nature.
2. When you are in need of a new appliance, try to make it an EnergyStar compliant product.
3. Buy a kill-o-watt meter. It monitors and tracks wasted energy.
Try unplugging unused items for one month. Compare the bills month to month and see how much money you just put into your pocket. If you cannot afford new efficient products, save up all the money you just saved and go get yourself one.

This is very true. We did a study on Icrontic about phantom power draw.
I found you through Twitter - Icrontic.com is based in Warren as well :)
This is great advice that anyone can do. Thanks!

Wouldn't that be $400 that you give away, not $600 ?
