Energy Efficient Homes Save Energy and Money

With summer just around the corner home improvement projects are beginning to take off. As more and more people become conscious of the environment and work to reduce their carbon footprint, energy efficient, green upgrades are gaining in popularity. By making a few changes around your home you will not only save money but also do your part to reduce negative effects on the environment. The following tips will help you save green while going green.

Energy Efficient Landscaping- It is not uncommon for people to overlook the importance of the placement of trees and shrubbery outside the home. Properly placed plants on the south and west side of your home can provide shade during the peak daytime heat. Increase the effectiveness of natural shade by keeping shades and blinds closed during the day to prevent heat buildup.

Replace AC Filters- As the days become longer and hotter it is important to make sure your air conditioners are running efficiently. Remember to change your air conditioner filter at the beginning of the summer and once a month throughout the warmer season to prevent restricted airflow which will make your unit work harder and run longer. Other ways to reduce energy consumption and save on your cooling costs would include raising the thermostat setting and/or using a programmable thermostat.

Sealing and Insulating- Two great ways to lower energy use while shaving dollars off your energy bill include sealing leaks and adding insulation. When correctly installed insulation combined with sealed doors and windows will increase comfort during both the hottest and coldest days without wasting energy.

Upgrade Appliances- If you budget includes upgrading major appliances be sure to look for Energy Star approved appliances to save money and energy.

Use Nature To Your Advantage- When the weather permits open your windows to give your air conditioner a break while allowing fresh air into your home. Hang your clothes outside to dry and open the window blinds after the hottest part of the day has passed to take advantage of natural light. Another great way to take advantage of the warmer weather would include getting the family outside to enjoy activities. The benefits are two-fold; first you have more time to spend with your kids enjoying nature or activities such as swimming or hiking. Second, by spending time together outside the home, the TV's, computers, video games and other energy consuming appliances can take a break.

Making your home more energy efficient will save you more money in heating and cooling costs in the long run while making a positive impact on the environment. If everyone makes small changes in their daily lives the results will be significant.

Extensions and home improvements is the most active area in residential construction. Customers are a lot more aware of their insulation requirements not because of their carbon footprint but mainly because of saving money. Because a lot of houses were built at lower standards it gives a chance to home owners to build an extension with higher standards and have a bigger house with similar heating costs.

Do you think the global recession is partially driving energy-efficient ways to save money?

installing energy efficient cfl and led lighting makes a huge difference in your homes energy consumption. we saw our energy bill go way down after installing both in our home.

Why just build energy efficient homes when you can build a ZERO Energy home. With the right building system, its very attainable. It will cost you a little more money in construction, but just think of the long term gain. When you eliminate $300-$500 in energy costs a month, you can invest that money back into your green home and build it right. If you would consider building the home yourself, and act as an owner builder, you can build your zero energy home for less than a conventional home, and with the right help, its a lot easier than you would think.

I agree with the heading of this topic 100%. More and more people in the UK are starting to move over to solar heating panels, on roof solar collectors and many more.

My energy bill is way too high.I was talking with my boss who agreed he pays to much in energy costs. He said solar can help reduce the monthly energy bill.He was saying that this one time investment will save me a lot and take care of my future power needs. Moreover, my energy company won’t bug me with increasing rates all of the time.So I did some research on this solar panel thing.I hit upon a website www.freecleansolar.com which has a lot of info and price comparisons, financing and leasing, tax credits and rebates.I feel more knowledgeable now.Do you guys think that I should go for this solar?Let me know

I am planning to buy a new home. Yesterday I went to see the property.A lot of properties in that area has some weird things installed on their roof tops.On further enquiry I could understand that these weird things were solar panels which can produce power for my new house.Somebody asked me to visit FreeCleanSolar.com to get more info. This site gave price comparisons, manufacturers of solar, leasing, financing, tax, credits and rebates. Do you guys think I should install these on my house??

One of the main components in saving energy as mentioned in the article is to have proper insulation, energy efficient doors and windows. Energy efficient windows if properly installed will bring down your energy bill significantly whether it would be for cooling or heating. There are very few manufacturers in US that are able to bring extreme energy efficient windows to the market. Though there some companies such as Intus Consulting ( www.intusconsulting.com )that offers highest quality, extremely energy efficient windows with outstanding U values.

I couldn't agree with this more. I am in the submetering industry and I encourage apartment and condo owners to install a submetering system so tennants pay more for using more water, gas and electricity. When usage directly effects how much they pay it's impressive how much less they use!

Sean McCutcheon's Air Conditioning said...

We are serious about doing our part to save energy and protect the environment. Recently Sean McCutcheon's Air Conditioning and Heating, Inc. worked on "The Power Haus" built by Josh Wynne Construction. Located in Sarasota, Florida, the house has achieved a minus 22 HERS index, the lowest HERS rating on record in the US, and is producing more energy than it consumes on a yearly basis.
This home has a 14.2 uni-solar flex lite amorphous silica that produces energy. It was reported that even if Power Haus doesn’t use this solar energy and depends on purchased energy, its score on HERS index would not cross 42.

It's not just energy-efficient homes that save energy and money - take a look at how buildings can save too. Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program marked the midpoint of its 2011 National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings. In the first six months of the competition alone, the competitors together have saved more than $3.7 million on utility bills and prevented 18,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions – that’s equal to the electricity used by 2,300 homes annually.

Teams from 245 buildings around the country are going head-to-head in this year’s ENERGY STAR National Building Competition to see who can reduce their energy use the most. The building with the largest percentage reduction in energy use, adjusted for weather and the size of the building, will be recognized as the winner in November.

Today EPA announced the Top Contenders for each of twelve building categories, including Boston’s Colonnade Hotel, the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, Office Depot in Plano, Texas, and a parking garage at the University of Central Florida.

There’s a lot we can all do in our own workplaces, as well. Actor John Corbett, the 2011 ENERGY STAR National Building Competition spokesperson, offers some tips in a new video posted today on the ENERGY STAR site www.energystar.gov/battleofthebuildings.

ENERGY STAR was started by EPA in 1992 as a market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on commercial and industrial buildings as well as new homes and more than 60 different kinds of products that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by EPA. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved about $18 billion on their energy bills while preventing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 33 million vehicles.

I’m writing this to let you know of a new product that will help homeowners save money on their heating and cooling bills. The Larson Fan Company (on line) makes ventilation fan replacement inserts for ventilation fans made by the Broan and NuTone Companies, and is designed to save homeowners money on your utility bills by reducing the amount of energy their house uses. Typical homes can save 5-10% or more on their annually energy bills with these products. This is achieved because their ventilation fan inserts have an additional feature of an automatic built in damper. The built in damper will save homeowners money on their heating and cooling bills, by keeping warm air in their house during the winter, and preventing humid air from wicking into their house during the summer. This product really saves a lot when air conditioning is being used!
